Jigawa kicks off wet season farming with fertiliser for 90,000 farmers

Governor Launches 2026 Wet Season Agricultural Support Programme in Jigawa

DUTSE, Jigawa State — Governor Umar Namadi officially launched the 2026 Wet Season Agricultural Support Programme on Saturday at the Dutse Township Stadium, outlining key initiatives aimed at addressing challenges faced by farmers in the state.

The governor highlighted issues such as the rising cost of agricultural inputs, insufficient irrigation facilities, limited extension services, and increasing production costs as critical barriers to agricultural productivity. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving food security in Jigawa State.

“Many farmers continue to encounter difficulties, particularly in accessing quality inputs on time amid rising energy costs and production expenses,” Namadi said. He emphasized that the new programme aims to equip farmers with essential inputs, equipment, and support services before the farming season begins.

As part of the initiative, the state government plans to distribute subsidized fertilizer to 90,000 farmers, with 50,000 receiving direct assistance and another 40,000 benefiting through a partnership with the Bank of Agriculture and StarAgri.

To enhance irrigation efforts, the administration will also provide 6,000 high-capacity solar-powered water pumps to farmers engaged in year-round activities. Additionally, 1,185 motorcycles will be allocated to agricultural extension workers to improve their mobility and ensure timely support reaches farmers in rural areas.

Namadi reported that more than 250,000 farmers have already benefited from various agricultural interventions, including subsidized inputs and mechanization services, as part of the state’s agricultural transformation agenda.

He reiterated his government’s goal to establish Jigawa as a leading agricultural hub through continued investments in mechanization, irrigation, seed production, agro-processing, and climate-smart practices.

Dr. Saifullahi Umar, Director General of the Jigawa Agricultural Transformation Agency, urged programme beneficiaries to use their support responsibly and repay credit facilities promptly to ensure the sustainability of these initiatives.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Maiunguwa Jaga, chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria in Jigawa State, praised the intervention as timely and capable of enhancing agricultural production across the region.
