Jigawa police arrest 17 motorists over alleged traffic rules violation
The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended 17 motorists for alleged violations of road traffic laws as part of a newly launched enforcement initiative known as Operation Velvet.
Police spokesman SP Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the arrests in a statement to the press. The operation began on Monday in the Dutse Local Government Area, aiming to enhance compliance with traffic regulations, decrease traffic offenses and accidents, and improve safety for motorists and other road users.
SP Shiisu detailed that the 17 motorists were stopped for various infractions, including the use of covered number plates, unauthorized tinted glass, and overloading.
Following their interception, the motorists were charged according to legal protocols and will face prosecution in the appropriate courts.
The police emphasized that Operation Velvet is intended to promote responsible driving rather than to inconvenience law-abiding citizens. Authorities plan to extend the operation to major towns and cities across Jigawa State, warning that any motorists found violating traffic laws will face legal repercussions.
Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala urged all road users, including commercial drivers, tricycle and motorcycle riders, to adhere strictly to traffic laws and avoid reckless behaviors that could endanger lives.
Murtala also encouraged the public to assist the police by providing information on ongoing traffic violations that may pose risks to safety.
