Lagos Deputy Governor Outlines Vision Ahead of 2027 Elections

Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos State’s deputy governor and the governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, discussed his plans for the state and addressed key issues in a recent interview.
Governor’s Role as a Team Leader
Hamzat emphasized that the governor acts as a team captain, coordinating various experts to implement policies that improve the lives of Lagos residents. He noted, “The job of the governor is to ensure that every project, from building new hospitals to clearing drains, affects the quality of life for Lagosians.”
Focus of the Current Administration
With the state administration poised to conclude its term, Hamzat spoke about the importance of completing ongoing projects under the THEMES Plus agenda, which encompasses several strategic initiatives. He asserted that the aim is for this administration to “finish strong” and prepare a solid foundation for the next.
Detailed Manifesto Plans
The APC’s manifesto, which is currently under review, spans around 537 pages and includes numerous proposals. Hamzat indicated that consultations with various stakeholders, such as market women and academic experts, are underway to refine priorities. One major goal is to ensure that 60% of Lagosians have access to running water within the next two years, with specific costing and planning underway.
Discipline and Governance
Addressing perceptions of stringent governance under his leadership, Hamzat acknowledged the necessity for discipline within society. He argued that improved organization and adherence to regulations are essential for harmonious living, stating that proper use of infrastructure, such as walkways, is vital for urban development.
Navigating Party Dynamics
Hamzat discussed the political landscape, addressing grievances stemming from the last party primaries. He confirmed ongoing discussions aimed at fostering unity within the party and stressed that disagreements are part of governance but do not hinder progress.
Commitment to Inclusivity
Regarding his running mate selection, Hamzat noted the importance of gender balance, choosing a female candidate who represents the youth and diversification of leadership. He acknowledged the need for a strong partnership with his deputy to effectively serve the state.
Avoiding Successor Conflicts
When questioned about potential rifts between administrations, Hamzat expressed confidence, citing his strong working relationship with current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He reflected on their long history of collaboration and mutual respect.
Infrastructure and Safety Concerns
On the recurring issue of building collapses in Lagos, Hamzat advocated for stricter regulations and the implementation of a Certified Accreditors Programme to ensure safety in new constructions. He underscored the necessity of ongoing monitoring and community involvement in identifying issues with older buildings.
