Man sues ex-wife over refusal to leave after divorce

Businessman Seeks Court Action Against Ex-Wife Over Household Dispute

KARU, Nigeria — Abibu Yakubu has initiated legal proceedings against his former wife, Shuwadatu Mohammed, at Upper Area Court 1 over allegations of her refusal to vacate their shared residence following their divorce.

In a petition filed on October 13, 2025, Yakubu claims that the couple’s relationship dissolved approximately five years ago, yet Mohammed has remained in the home they previously shared, located at Orange Market in Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area.

Yakubu states that Mohammed has shown a lack of respect toward him and his family, often resorting to insults. He reports that the marriage produced four children, aged 22, 19, and six-year-old twins.

In addition to resolving the housing dispute, Yakubu is seeking custody of the children and alleges that Mohammed has made threats against his life, claiming she would not leave their home until she harmed him. He expressed concern for his safety, stating that he no longer sleeps soundly due to the situation.

Yakubu has requested the court to hold Mohammed accountable should any harm come to him and also to consider the re-dissolution of their marriage.

Judge Mohammed Yakubu has scheduled a follow-up hearing for June 3 to continue deliberations on the case.
