Mother Fights Gender Violence Through Football as Mexico Hosts World Cup
MEXICO CITY — As Mexico prepares to cohost the World Cup, one mother is taking a stand against gender violence in her community by leveraging the power of sports. Nallely Arenas, a lawyer with years of legal experience, is cofounding Cancha Violeta, a grassroots organization aimed at providing a safe environment for youth living amid issues of gender violence and cartel activity.
Arenas is particularly focused on the well-being of her daughter, Karol, who trains with the team in hopes of being selected for the upcoming Street Child World Cup. With the global spotlight of the World Cup approaching, Arenas is determined to safeguard her daughter while addressing the broader challenges that women in Mexico face.
The initiative is documented in “Mexico: Football Without Fear,” a film by Elpida Nikou and Rodrigo Hernandez, which explores the intersection of sports and social issues in the country.
