NDLEA Convicts Man for Advertising Cannabis on Social Media

KANO, Nigeria — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the conviction of a 28-year-old man for promoting cannabis for sale on social media.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the Media and Advocacy Officer for the Kano Strategic Command, reported that Ashiru Idris has been sentenced to seven years in prison by the Federal High Court in Kano, without the option of a fine.

Idris was arrested on April 22, 2026, after a video circulated online that allegedly featured him advertising cannabis sativa. The NDLEA officers acted on a directive from State Commander CN D.Y. Lawal.

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court 1 in Kano presided over the case and ordered that Idris’ prison sentence commence on July 14, 2026.

The NDLEA characterized the ruling as a stern warning to individuals involved in the public promotion of illegal drug activities.

Kano State Commander CN Lawal responded to the judgment, stating, “This ruling reinforces our resolve to tackle drug offenders who openly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure that offenders face justice.”

The NDLEA has called on families, community leaders, and social media users to assist in the fight against drug abuse by providing the agency with pertinent information.
