NDLEA and Military Team Seize Large Cannabis Cache in Edo State
BESSY, Edo State — A joint operation by the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Army led to the discovery of a significant cannabis warehouse in a residential area.
Mitchell Ofoyeju, the State Commander of the NDLEA, confirmed the raid in a press statement on Tuesday in Benin City. The operation occurred in a four-bedroom bungalow located in Illushi, within the Esan South-East Local Government Area.
Two individuals, Ojore Onweze, 45, and George Agwumede, 30, were arrested during the operation. Ofoyeju reported that Onweze was found with 60 kilograms of cannabis, while Agwumede was apprehended with over 13 kilograms.
Authorities confiscated a total of 1,273 kilograms of skunk cannabis and 86 kilograms of cannabis seeds, along with 52 large bags and three gallons of cannabis seeds from the site.
Ofoyeju expressed concern regarding the use of residential properties for drug storage, describing it as a troubling trend that poses risks to local communities. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in combatting drug-related crimes.
“This fight is not just for the NDLEA; it is a collective responsibility,” Ofoyeju stated, appreciating the partnership with the Nigerian Army in these efforts.
The investigation into the drug operation is ongoing, as officials work to identify possible connections and accomplices. Ofoyeju assured the public that the NDLEA remains committed to eliminating drug trafficking in Edo State and will continue to pursue those involved in the distribution of illegal substances.
