Nigerian Army prevents reprisal attack over rustled livestock in Plateau

Nigerian Troops Repel Armed Attack in Plateau State

MANGU, Plateau State — Troops from Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) successfully repelled suspected Fulani bandits during a rapid response operation on July 2, following reports of gunfire around the Banasu High Ground in the Mangu Local Government Area.

According to a statement released by the military on its verified X account, the incident began at approximately 1:52 p.m. when troops from Sector 8, Sub-Sector 81, stationed at Gyambwas, received urgent reports of intermittent gunfire in the area.

The Army indicated that the attempted assault was linked to prior attacks on local residents and livestock rustling attributed to militant groups in Mangu.

In response to the distress signal, the troops swiftly deployed to the site and engaged the attackers in a firefight. The statement noted that the superior firepower of the military personnel led to the assailants abandoning their mission and retreating into the surrounding high ground.

No casualties were reported among the troops during the encounter.

The military has since maintained surveillance of the area, with ongoing efforts to track the fleeing suspects and mitigate any potential for further attacks.

“This operation is part of the continued efforts by Operation Enduring Peace to deter armed militia activities and enhance security throughout Plateau State,” the statement concluded.
