Oyo abduction: Partisan politics taken too far – Oshiomhole rubbishes Makinde’s call on UN

Oshiomhole Rejects UN Investigation Call on Abduction Incident
Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole has dismissed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s appeal to the United Nations for an investigation into the abduction and rescue of pupils and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Governor Makinde made the request during a statewide address on Monday, following the handover of the rescued individuals by the Nigerian military. He argued that the circumstances surrounding the incident warranted independent scrutiny that transcends Nigeria’s domestic institutions.
In a response during Tuesday’s plenary session, Oshiomhole urged the governor to retract his request, emphasizing Nigeria’s status as a sovereign nation. He expressed concern that the governor’s call for international intervention undermined the efforts of President Bola Tinubu and the security forces involved in the rescue mission.
“The Oyo State Governor calling on the United Nations to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and subsequent rescue is unstatesmanlike,” Oshiomhole stated. “This Senate should condemn his unguided statement.”
He further criticized Makinde for politicizing the situation, asserting that such comments trivialize the accomplishments of Nigerian forces, which have successfully carried out rescues without resorting to ransom payments.
