Police arrest man over alleged false alarm of bandits’ invasion in Ebonyi community

Ebonyi State Police Arrest Man for Spreading False Information

The Ebonyi State Police Command has taken into custody a man named Nwali Nwibo for allegedly disseminating false reports regarding an invasion by bandits and suspected Fulani herdsmen in the Nguzu Edda Community, located in Edda Local Government Area.

The police apprehended Nwibo following what they described as a meticulous intelligence-led investigation that determined the claims were unsubstantiated. This information was released in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer SP Joshua Ukandu on Thursday.

The investigation was initiated after the false information gained traction and heightened concerns among local residents. “The arrest followed a painstaking intelligence-led investigation conducted by the Command, which established the falsity of the report and led to the apprehension of the suspect,” the statement noted.

Ebonyi State Police Commissioner, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, urged community members to verify information before sharing it on social media or other communication platforms. She cautioned that the spread of misleading information could incite unnecessary panic, erode public trust, and threaten peace and order.

Okafor reiterated the importance of using social media responsibly, warning against actions that could instill fear within communities. She emphasized the Command’s commitment to identifying and prosecuting individuals involved in the creation and circulation of fake news and misinformation as mandated by law.

The police commissioner also assured residents of the Command’s vigilance and commitment to ensuring security throughout the state. She encouraged citizens to depend on verified information from official sources and to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities.

Residents are urged to refrain from spreading unverified reports that could lead to public unrest or tension.
