Kano State Police Arrest Three in Car Theft Investigation

KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Police Command reported the arrest of three individuals believed to be involved in a car theft scheme. The operation, which resulted in the recovery of stolen vehicles, took place on May 16.

Police Public Relations Officer Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa announced the arrests in a statement released on Sunday, detailing that members of the Command’s Special Intervention Squad acted on credible intelligence to apprehend the suspects, linked to a stolen Toyota Camry.

The suspects have been identified as Abel Nanlir Nafa from Abuja, Stephen Wanneh from Kaduna State, and Habiba Mohammad from Kano State. One suspect admitted to knowing that the vehicle—a black 2015 Toyota Camry without a registration number—was stolen from Enugu State and was intended for sale.

“Based on the confession, the suspect acknowledged being aware of the vehicle’s status when he received it for sale,” police stated. The second suspect also admitted to knowledge of the car’s stolen status, while the third indicated she had contacted a buyer in the Niger Republic who agreed to purchase the vehicle for 1.5 million naira.

The stolen Toyota Camry has been recovered, and authorities are working to apprehend additional suspects believed to be part of the operation and to identify the vehicle’s rightful owner.

In a related incident, police recovered two more suspected stolen vehicles during a follow-up search at the residence of another suspect, identified as Haruna Ibrahim, in Kano. The vehicles recovered include a red 2016 Hyundai Sonata, also without a registration number, and a 2014 Hyundai Elantra with registration number KMC 523 TF.

The police command has urged anyone who recognizes the recovered vehicles to come forward with proof of ownership. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori commended the operatives for their successful operation, emphasizing the importance of intelligence-led policing. He also encouraged residents to remain vigilant and prompt in reporting suspicious activities, assuring that all information would be treated confidentially.
