Police bans keke routes in Rivers amid rising ‘One Chance’ robberies

Rivers State Police Enforce Tricycle Restrictions Amid Rise in Robberies

Port Harcourt, Rivers State — The Rivers State Police Command has implemented restrictions on tricycle (locally known as Keke) operations in designated areas of Port Harcourt as part of a response to a growing number of “one chance” robbery incidents.

This directive, announced by Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju on Monday, May 11, 2026, seeks to enhance security measures aimed at reducing street crimes that target commuters.

According to police intelligence reports, several robbery and abduction cases have been linked to individuals using tricycles on major routes throughout the city.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the measures, emphasizing the need to protect residents and restore order to the transportation system.

“We have documented troubling instances where criminals pose as tricycle operators to rob unsuspecting passengers,” she stated. “The restriction is intended to help us eliminate these criminal elements and safeguard lives and property.”

To ensure compliance, joint police patrol teams have been deployed across Port Harcourt, with a focus on balancing enforcement to ensure genuine operators are not unduly harassed.

The police also urged residents to remain vigilant, advising them to avoid boarding suspicious or unregistered tricycles and to promptly report any questionable activities to the authorities.
