Precision airstrike hits suspected ISWAP gathering in Borno

Precision Airstrike Targets ISWAP Fighters in Borno State
The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI launched a precision airstrike targeting a suspected gathering of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters early on July 17 in Yaganari, Borno State. This operation is part of ongoing military efforts against insurgents in Nigeria’s northeastern region.
The details of the airstrike were reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security analyst who specializes in the Lake Chad area. According to Makama’s report, the operation followed extensive intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) assessments that tracked the movements of suspected terrorists to what military sources described as a larger assembly.
Surveillance operations commenced after troops received credible intelligence concerning potential terrorist activities in the Yaganari area. Initially, aerial assets monitored four suspected terrorists before two of them led operators to a location where approximately 12 suspected ISWAP fighters had gathered.
“After confirming the target and ensuring operational parameters were met, a precision strike was executed against the location at about 12:32 a.m.,” stated the report, indicating that the strike successfully hit the gathering.
Preliminary assessments following the strike suggested that an unconfirmed number of suspected ISWAP fighters were neutralized, while others fled the scene in various directions. Military surveillance aircraft continued to monitor the location post-strike to track the fleeing suspects and identify additional opportunities for follow-up operations.
Makama noted that military officials characterized the airstrike as an intelligence-driven offensive aimed at disrupting terrorist activities, diminishing the operational capabilities of ISWAP, and preventing the regrouping of fighters.
This operation is part of a broader air campaign under Operation HADIN KAI, which targets suspected terrorist enclaves, logistical hubs, and movement corridors across Borno State to support ground operations.
