Former Kano State Governor Calls for Active Role of Deputy Governors Forum
Abuja — Former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has urged the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria to take a more proactive approach in mediating disputes between current governors and their deputies.
Speaking in Abuja during a visit from members of the Forum ahead of their annual national conference, Ganduje emphasized that fostering peace between governors and their deputies is essential for enhancing good governance and stability in the nation.
Ganduje, who previously served as deputy governor before his tenure as governor, remarked that the Forum is well-positioned to intervene in conflicts, regardless of political affiliations. He argued that the collective experience and authority of former deputy governors could generate respect among political actors and help avert political crises that may disrupt governance.
He described the deputy governorship as one of the most challenging roles within Nigeria’s political landscape, yet essential for effective governance and constitutional succession. Ganduje highlighted the critical support that deputy governors provide to their principals, ensuring continuity during transitions.
The former APC national chairman also called on his peers to address the increasing conflicts between outgoing governors and their successors, labeling it a recurring issue within Nigeria’s democratic framework.
Earlier, Chris Akomas, the chairman of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors, expressed the organization’s commitment to promoting national unity, good governance, and policies that support sustainable development. Akomas, who served as deputy governor of Abia State, noted that the Forum aims to advance nation-building through collaboration with government entities, academia, and development partners.
