Stop hitting women — Nollywood veteran RMD joins fight against gender based violence

Nigerian Actor Richard Mofe-Damijo Champions Gender Equality

Abuja, Nigeria — Renowned Nigerian actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, widely known as RMD, has taken a stand against gender-based violence in Nigeria. His commitment was highlighted after he joined the Male Feminists Network on Friday.

Speaking in Abuja, the 65-year-old veteran emphasized the importance of increasing women’s representation, particularly in governmental roles.

“I have worked on projects where the crew comprised about 80 percent women,” Mofe-Damijo said. “In my view, if you want effective governance, place a woman in charge, and you can rest easy.”

He urged men to treat women with respect, rejecting objectification and advocating for dignity in all interactions.

“Respect women as you would your own daughter or wife. Communication is key; addressing issues should not involve violence,” he stated.

Mofe-Damijo also called on men to actively contribute to changing damaging attitudes towards women, asserting that the fight against gender-based violence should not rest solely on women’s shoulders.

“There are systemic ways in which women’s rights are undermined in Nigeria, and it is essential for men to join in advocating for change,” he remarked.

Dr. Otive Igbuzor, a public affairs analyst and gender advocate, noted that influential figures, including traditional leaders and religious authorities, can play a crucial role in combating gender-based violence.
