Spanish Midfielder Mikel Merino Prepares for World Cup Final Against Argentina
Published: July 17, 2026
Mikel Merino, the Spanish midfielder known for his impactful performances off the bench, acknowledged the formidable challenge of defending against Lionel Messi in the upcoming World Cup final against Argentina.
“Neutralizing Messi will be a huge challenge, but it serves as incredible motivation for me and the entire team,” Merino stated during a news conference held at Spain’s training base in East Hanover, New Jersey. He expressed excitement over competing against a team with such a storied history in World Cup play.
Argentina’s Messi, 39, has been a critical factor in leading his team to the final, contributing two assists in a 2-1 semifinal victory over England. As the tournament’s joint top-scorer with eight goals, he has also played a key role in Argentina’s dramatic comeback against Egypt in the round of 16, where the team recovered from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2.
Merino has made significant contributions to Spain’s success, scoring late-game winners in both the last-16 victory over Portugal and the quarterfinal against Belgium.
“I possess strong confidence in my abilities, and I believe I can make a difference every time I step onto the field,” Merino said. “However, in the end, it doesn’t matter who the standout player is; what matters is that the team achieves victory. A title belongs to all of us, not just the starting eleven.”
The 30-year-old midfielder also praised the abilities of 19-year-old Lamine Yamal, who is expected to face Messi for the first time, representing a clash between the past and future of FC Barcelona.
Merino anticipates a highly competitive final and stressed the importance of controlling the match’s intensity. “The referee will need to manage the intensity and frequency of fouls. Keeping the ball moving quickly can help minimize the opposition’s chances to commit infractions,” he noted.
Reflecting on Spain’s first World Cup title in 2010, Merino expressed pride in representing his country and inspiring future generations. “It’s a magical experience to represent our nation and be role models for the children watching us today,” he said.
Spain and Argentina will face off in the final on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
