Troops Thwart Cross-Border Assault by Militants in Borno State
Borno State, Nigeria — Troops from the Joint Task Force engaged in Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled a cross-border attack by suspected ISWAP and Boko Haram militants, neutralizing 12 combatants in the Kirawa region.
The engagement occurred around 11:00 p.m. on May 22 as part of ongoing counter-insurgency efforts, including Operation Desert Sanity V and Siege Operations. Security analysts reported the confrontation following intelligence shared on social media.
According to sources, the militants attempted to breach the troops’ positions from Cameroon but were intercepted and faced with overwhelming firepower. The well-prepared troops reacted swiftly, forcing the militants to retreat, with several reported to have sustained gunshot wounds.
The operation benefited from intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) assets, alongside air support and coordination with allied forces. Initial assessments indicated that 12 militants were neutralized, while several others were injured during the clash. One soldier was reported injured.
Troops did not sustain any equipment losses and seized various items from the attackers, including AK-47 rifles, RPG components, and ammunition rounds.
Military officials confirmed that troops are maintaining their positions and conducting follow-up operations in the area to thwart any regrouping attempts by fleeing militants. They emphasized the importance of ongoing vigilance, noting that while the security situation remains calm, it is also unpredictable.
Operation HADIN KAI continues its efforts to restrict the operational capabilities of terrorist groups and to foster stability in the Northeast region.
