Nigerian Troops Repel ISWAP Attack in Borno State
Borno State, Nigeria — Troops from the Joint Task Force, North East, known as Operation HADIN KAI, successfully repelled an attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on the Forward Operating Base in Mairari, Guzamala Local Government Area.
The Nigerian Army announced the incident in a statement posted on their verified social media account on Thursday. The attack took place at approximately 11:25 p.m. on July 1, 2026.
According to the statement, the troops responded decisively, inflicting significant casualties on the assailants and forcing them to retreat. During the operation, the troops recovered various weapons, including AK-47 rifles, loaded magazines, rocket-propelled grenade tubes, and other military equipment.
The attack targeted the recently resettled Mairari community, which has welcomed over 950 returning households. Fortunately, the offensive did not disrupt the resettlement process, and no civilian casualties were reported.
The army confirmed that two soldiers and one member of the Civilian Joint Task Force were killed during the engagement, with some military equipment sustaining damage from rocket-propelled grenade fire.
“The Theatre Command extends its condolences to the families of the fallen heroes,” the statement read. It also noted that a reinforcement team from Monguno detected and safely detonated two improvised explosive devices along the withdrawal route before engaging with the retreating terrorists, resulting in additional casualties for the assailants.
The successful defense of FOB Mairari underscores the combat readiness and resilience of Operation HADIN KAI troops, who remain dedicated to maintaining offensive operations and restoring peace and security throughout the North East, according to the statement.
