Unity Schools: FGC Enugu emerges champion of old students 2026 national sports festival

Federal Government College, Enugu Wins 2026 USOSA National Sports Fiesta

Enugu, Nigeria – The 2026 National Sports Fiesta, organized by the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA), concluded with Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu claiming the championship title. The school secured its victory by earning a total of eight gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.

FGC Ikot Ekpene Old Students Association finished in second place with seven gold, seven silver, and three bronze medals, demonstrating strong competition among the 30 Unity Schools participating in the event.

The week-long sports festival, held at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, brought together alumni from federal unity colleges across the nation. Events included football, tug of war, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, snooker, ludo, draughts, badminton, volleyball, basketball, and golf.

FGC Ikot Ekpene was a strong contender throughout the competition but ultimately fell short of retaining the trophy as FGC Enugu dominated the medal standings.

Michael Magaji, President-General of USOSA, addressed participants after the tournament, highlighting the broader importance of sports beyond competition. He emphasized sports as a critical tool for fostering national unity and development.

“We recognize sports as a unifying force that brings people together and fosters prosperity,” Magaji said. “This event in Enugu provides us with another platform to strengthen our bonds, celebrate our diversity, and exemplify responsible citizenship.”

He noted USOSA’s commitment to enhancing public education and stressed that sports serve as an additional means to deepen relationships and contribute to nation-building.

“Through this initiative, we aim to build bridges across the country and reinforce relationships that span decades,” he explained.

Magaji stated that USOSA’s initiatives are voluntary efforts aimed at giving back to society, especially to the public education system that helped shape its members. He underscored the association’s goal of restoring the high standards once associated with unity schools.

“These institutions were previously recognized for excellence, and although standards may have declined, we are dedicated to restoring and even surpassing those standards, one school at a time,” he added.
