Uniuyo to mount CCTV cameras, log-in biometric capturing on campuses

University of Uyo Plans Technological Upgrades and Stricter Security Measures

UYO, Akwa Ibom State — The University of Uyo has announced plans to implement advanced security technology, including Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and biometric systems, to enhance safety and accurately determine the number of staff and students on campus.

Professor Christopher Ekong made the announcement during his investiture as the ninth Vice-Chancellor of the university. He indicated that his administration would conduct a thorough audit covering infrastructure, finances, human resources, academic programs, and administrative systems.

In a move to address issues of cultism and sexual harassment, Ekong emphasized a zero-tolerance policy. He stated that any individual found to be engaged in such activities would face expulsion within 72 hours.

“During the first 100 days of my administration, we will implement biometric capturing to accurately account for staff and student populations and enhance access control,” Ekong said. He also reiterated his commitment to a comprehensive institutional audit.

Furthermore, Ekong plans to outsource the management of essential facilities, such as hostels and lecture halls, to dedicated managers to ensure sustainable operations and round-the-clock internet access for the university community.

Dr. Muiz Banire, Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, praised Ekong for his selection, achieved through a competitive process. He urged the new Vice-Chancellor to remain focused and dismiss any negativity from detractors.

“The path to this point has been challenging,” Banire remarked. “It is essential that you focus on your responsibilities and not be sidetracked by opposition. The challenges ahead are significant.”

Outgoing Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Samuel Odewumi echoed similar sentiments, advising Ekong to focus on moving the university forward rather than dwelling on the past.
