Why I wished for death in my 20s – Adekunle Gold

Afrobeats Singer Adekunle Gold Discusses Living with Sickle Cell Disease
Afrobeats artist Adekunle Gold recently shared his experiences as a patient with sickle cell disease, highlighting the stigma he faces in his daily life. In an interview with media personality Angela Yee, Gold disclosed that when he informs others about his condition, he often feels their apprehension, as if they believe his prognosis is dire.
The 36-year-old recalled a particularly challenging moment at the age of 20, during which he endured excruciating pain from a sickle cell crisis that left him contemplating death. He noted that his mother, who typically would urge him against such thoughts, refrained from doing so that night, recognizing the severity of his distress.
“At 20, I had the craziest crisis of my life. I told God to take my life, and my mom couldn’t even rebuke me,” he said. “It got to a point where it felt like the only thing that made sense should just happen.”
Despite the challenges, Gold expressed gratitude for his resilience and continued determination to fight against the condition. He emphasized the importance of survival and maintaining hope while managing his health.
