World Cup 2026: FIFA drops referee after arrest over sexual assault involving teenage boy.

Dutch Referee Removed from World Cup Roster Following Arrest

Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has been removed from FIFA’s roster for the upcoming World Cup following his arrest in the United Kingdom last month, although the case has since been closed due to insufficient evidence.

Dieperink, 38, was serving as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during a Conference League match between Crystal Palace and Fiorentina on April 9 when he was taken into custody in his hotel room. He faced allegations of sexual assault involving a teenage boy.

Following an investigation, law enforcement determined that no charges would be filed against Dieperink, leading to the dismissal of the case.

Included in FIFA’s list of VAR officials for the World Cup set to begin on June 11, Dieperink has confirmed that he will not participate in the tournament. In an interview with the Dutch publication De Telegraaf, he expressed disappointment over the false accusations.

“I deeply regret that I have been falsely accused,” Dieperink said. “From the outset, I have fully cooperated with the police investigation and have also provided complete transparency to FIFA, UEFA, and the KNVB.”

He emphasized that the allegations were disproven quickly after a thorough investigation. “I am thankful for the support from the KNVB and the manner in which they managed this situation,” he added, expressing regret over FIFA’s decision not to include him in the World Cup.

A spokesperson for the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) underscored their commitment to a safe and ethical football culture. “We take reports of inappropriate conduct seriously. A Dutch referee must have impeccable character, but it is essential that he has the opportunity to share his narrative and not be wrongfully accused,” the spokesperson stated.

The KNVB noted Dieperink’s cooperation with authorities from the beginning and indicated there were no reasons to prevent him from officiating in the Dutch league based on the available information.
