World Cup: ‘There’s none better than him’ – Bothroyd names England star to stop Messi

Tottenham’s Djed Spence Poised for Key Role Against Argentina
Former England international Jay Bothroyd has highlighted the potential contributions of Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence in England’s upcoming semi-final match against Argentina at the 2026 World Cup. Bothroyd suggested that Spence could play a crucial role in countering Argentine star Lionel Messi.
Spence has been a consistent presence for England during the tournament, featuring in all six matches, with two starting appearances. He has showcased his versatility by playing in both right-back and left-back positions. With Reece James sidelined due to injury and Jarell Quansah suspended, Spence’s involvement in the semi-final is expected to be significant.
Messi has emerged as a leading contender for the World Cup’s Golden Ball, having scored eight goals and provided two assists in six matches. His influence will be a focal point in England’s defensive plans under coach Thomas Tuchel.
In remarks made on Sky Sports, Bothroyd expressed confidence in Spence’s abilities, suggesting that he may outperform regular left-back Nico O’Reilly in terms of defending against Messi. “Especially when he plays on the left-hand side, I feel like if you’ve got Spence in that position, there’s none better than him out there as a one-on-one defender,” Bothroyd stated, emphasizing the importance of a robust defensive strategy.
The semi-final match is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, at Atlanta Stadium, promising to be a highly anticipated showdown between two footballing powerhouses.
