2026 World Cup: Why Argentina beat England 2-1 – Tuchel

England Manager Thomas Tuchel Blames Football “DNA” for Loss to Argentina in World Cup Semifinal
England manager Thomas Tuchel attributed the team’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup to the inherent characteristics of English football.
The Three Lions initially took the lead in the match with a goal scored in the 55th minute but were ultimately unable to maintain their advantage against the current champions.
The outcome has sparked significant criticism of Tuchel’s tactics, which many analysts described as overly defensive.
“In this moment, my feeling was no structure in the world could have helped us,” Tuchel remarked after the match. “We were too passive, not physical enough, and we failed to intercept the runners entering our box.”
Tuchel noted that, following England’s goal, the momentum shifted dramatically. He pointed out a steep decline in ball possession, leading to an inability to win pivotal duels. “It was never the plan for us to drop deeper, but that’s what happened,” he said.
He emphasized the difficulty in preventing attacking runs from midfield, attributing the Argentinean team’s success to high-quality deliveries. “If you can’t regain ball possession, you struggle to break the pressure and recover momentum,” he explained.
Tuchel acknowledged the significance of ball possession in a match, suggesting that it may not be as ingrained in English football culture as it is in the playing styles of Spain or South American teams like Argentina and Brazil.
