2027: Nobody gives power, you must take it — Wike tells PDP candidates

ABUJA — Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and National Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), called on party members Wednesday to brace themselves for a challenging political landscape leading up to the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that political power is not given but rather claimed through struggle, sacrifice, and hard work.

Wike spoke during the PDP’s 109th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where he asserted that opposition politics requires resilience, organization, and unwavering determination. He warned members that the party would not regain power through entitlement or wishful thinking.

Drawing from his own political experiences, Wike encouraged aspirants not to be discouraged by external pressures, arrests, or legal battles, arguing that success is often achieved in the face of adversity.

“Power is taken, not given. You must fight for it. Never be afraid,” Wike stated.

Addressing ongoing internal disputes and court cases, the former Rivers State governor reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its electoral preparations. He assured members that legal challenges would not interfere with their plans.

As crucial deadlines approach, he remarked, “June 26 is when they will provide access for political parties to upload results. We are prepared, and we have no fear of the courts.”

Wike acknowledged that many party members are struggling to adjust to life outside of power after years of political influence. He emphasized that reclaiming their position will require a fundamental shift in mindset.

“Many of you used to take from the party when it was in power. Now that the support is dwindling, you feel the world has ended,” he said.

He urged aspiring governors and candidates to prioritize results over excuses, stressing that true leadership will be judged by performance and grassroots engagement.

“Everyone must contribute meaningfully for the 2027 elections. This is not a place for empty hands,” Wike asserted.

Additionally, he called on party members to remain resolute in the face of adversity, framing political struggles as tests of commitment and endurance.

“If you are threatened, be brave. Those who may try to intimidate you are human too. I have faced intimidation myself,” Wike noted. He expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge stronger despite its challenges.

“After the 2027 elections, we’ll return here to thank God for keeping our party alive. With a strong opposition, we can influence our future,” he said.

Earlier, PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed encouraged unity among members as the party prepares for upcoming elections. He praised party leaders and state chairmen for successfully conducting recent primaries and maintaining party structures amidst difficulties.

“Our goal is not merely to win elections but to provide visionary leadership to tackle Nigeria’s pressing issues,” Mohammed explained. He expressed confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a fair electoral process and thanked security agencies for their role in ensuring peace during the primaries.

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, appealed for reconciliation and unity while announcing the postponement of the board’s meeting to allow for adequate preparations.

He congratulated candidates who emerged from the primaries and urged party members to unify and focus on the party’s shared goals.

“The time for unity and collective action is now. There must be no victors and no vanquished,” he said.

Ohuabunwa also highlighted the importance of strengthening membership mobilization and voter registration efforts, insisting that electoral success hinges on robust grassroots support.

“Our strength lies in our unity. When we work together, victory becomes possible; division only weakens our resolve,” he concluded.
