2027: Defections, intrigues deepen battle for Edo tickets

By Ozioruva Aliu

BENIN CITY – As the 2027 general elections approach, political activity in Edo State is intensifying, with parties and candidates racing to secure nominations and solidify their support bases.

Political parties across Edo are enhancing their internal structures through congresses, strategic alliances, and defections, setting the stage for a competitive election cycle.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to be leading the charge, having conducted its ward, local government, and state congresses with relatively few disputes. Party leaders assert that these actions have strengthened its organizational structure and placed it in a favorable position against its opponents.

In contrast, some opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have also held congresses, although these events revealed significant internal divisions and dissent. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), once a dominant force in the state, is facing severe internal strife, with factions remaining relatively subdued as prominent members defect to the APC.

Recent high-profile defections include Clifford Ordia, a former PDP senatorial candidate for Edo Central, and two-term House of Representatives member Joe Edionwele. Their departures, along with those of former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly Marcus Onobun and other influential leaders, further undermine the PDP’s strength.

Political analysts note that this wave of defections is reshaping the power dynamics, leaving the opposition struggling to pose a significant challenge ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts suggest that the fate of the opposition may largely depend on how effectively the APC manages its internal processes, particularly in its primary elections, where missteps could present opportunities for rival parties.

Initial signs of discord are emerging, notably in the Edo South Senatorial District, where competition for National Assembly nominations is intensifying. With Edo State’s governorship election off-cycle, attention will shift to the presidential, National Assembly, and State House of Assembly contests.

Social media platforms are increasingly alive with political discussions, endorsements, and criticisms reflecting the growing stakes as parties gear up for the elections.

In Edo North Senatorial District, the APC seems to have solidified its grip, while opposition forces continue to falter. Alignment among key political actors across the district’s six local government areas further narrows the opposition’s ability to mobilize effectively. A recent boost for the APC came when several elected local government chairmen defected to the ruling party, seen as a significant setback for opposition forces.

At a rally welcoming the defectors, Governor Monday Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to progress and confirmed that new members would be treated equitably within the party. He proclaimed, “By the time our 2.5 million votes are delivered, no one will challenge it.”

APC State Chairman Jarrett Tenebe endorsed Senator Adams Oshiomhole as the party’s candidate for the Edo North senatorial seat, a decision that appears to preclude any significant challengers. However, the House of Representatives races in the district present a more complex challenge, particularly for incumbents like Hon. Peter Apata, who is vying for a fifth term amid emerging competitors.

In Edo Central, solid APC control continues following defections from opposition ranks, including notable figures such as Ordia and Edionwele. Governor Okpebholo touted these developments as endorsements of his governance during a reception for the defectors.

Despite the APC’s growing dominance, some PDP members adopt a cautious approach, evaluating their options amid a rapidly changing political landscape.

The major contest in this district will likely focus on the House of Representatives seat currently held by Hon. Marcus Onobun, whose position has come under scrutiny due to political tensions and ongoing protests related to security issues in the region.

In Edo South, the electoral terrain appears particularly charged, given the district’s political landscape and demographics. Historically, voters in this area have exhibited a strong penchant for independent decision-making. Allegations of candidate imposition are stirring dissent among party stakeholders, raising concerns about internal stability within the APC.

High-profile aspirants in the senatorial race include Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and incumbent Senator Neda Imasuen, while multiple constituencies in the region are witnessing competitive battles for House of Representatives nominations.

Political observers note that impending primaries may amplify existing tensions within the APC, potentially allowing the opposition to regain prominence should candidate selection become contentious.

As the 2027 elections loom, the political landscape in Edo State appears fluid, marked by defections, alliances, and fierce competition for nominations. While the APC currently enjoys a significant lead, its ability to navigate internal challenges will be critical in determining its electoral prospects. Meanwhile, the opposition must focus on rebuilding cohesion to present viable alternatives as voters, particularly in pivotal areas like Edo South, prepare to make their voices heard.
