May Day 2026: Borno LG workers protest non-implementation of N70,000 minimum wage

Protest Erupts Over Minimum Wage Implementation in Borno State

Maiduguri, Borno State — Local government workers in Borno State staged a protest on Friday demanding the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage. The demonstration took place in Maiduguri and was organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) alongside the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in observance of International Workers’ Day.

During the rally, Yusuf Inuwa, chairman of the state NLC, addressed journalists, highlighting that local government employees have been particularly hard-hit by the current economic challenges facing the country. He emphasized that the protest aimed to draw attention to their ongoing struggles.

“Two years ago, the national leadership of organized labor negotiated the N70,000 minimum wage, which is now law for all states,” Inuwa stated.

While he acknowledged that the Borno State government has implemented the wage for primary school teachers and healthcare workers, he noted that local government staff have yet to see similar benefits.

“Teachers and primary healthcare workers in Borno have been covered, but local government staff remain unaddressed,” he said. “An injury to one is an injury to all.”

Inuwa described the situation as unacceptable, citing the rising inflation and cost of living that workers can no longer endure. The protest serves as a call for action as workers seek equitable treatment under the law.
