How will Nigeria win World Cup when our good players play for England’ – Odemwingie

Former Nigerian International Questions Country’s World Cup Aspirations

Peter Osaze Odemwingie, a former Nigerian international footballer, has raised concerns about Nigeria’s chances of winning the World Cup, citing the trend of talented players representing other nations, particularly England.

Odemwingie, who debuted for the Nigerian national team in 2002, emphasized the importance of players of Nigerian descent born abroad embracing their heritage. Speaking with Brila FM, the 43-year-old highlighted the decisions made by several current players to represent England and other European countries, a list that includes Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Tammy Abraham, Noni Madueke, and Michael Olise.

He noted that the role of parents in influencing their children’s choices is significant. “Parents have a big role to play, but this generation often exhibits a certain pride that complicates matters,” Odemwingie remarked.

He expressed concern over a future where a significant portion of England’s national football squad could potentially consist of Nigerian talent. “Imagine one day the whole football squad of England will be Nigerians. How can Nigeria win the World Cup when our talents serve other nations?” he questioned.

Odemwingie remains hopeful that, in the future, players will choose to represent Nigeria and help the national team achieve success on the world stage, stating that many of these athletes possess the skills cultivated in more developed football environments.
