I think ADC is dead – Akpabio

Senate President Suggests African Democratic Congress is ‘Dead’ Amid Mass Defections
Senate President Godswill Akpabio indicated Tuesday that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) appears to be struggling, following a recent wave of defections by lawmakers to other political parties. His comments came during a plenary session where he presided over discussions regarding the departures of several members from the ADC, particularly to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Labour Party (LP).
Akpabio made his remarks after noting the official defection of Victor Umeh, who has joined the NDC. He emphasized the frequency of recent party changes among lawmakers, saying, “How many times can you defect in a month? Once. But some have done three times.”
He proposed a more streamlined approach to announcing defections, suggesting that lawmakers should compile their names based on their new party affiliations rather than announcing them individually. “So that it doesn’t look like a daily ritual,” he added.
His comments reflected frustration over the repeated changes and the ongoing turmoil within the ADC, which multiple lawmakers cited as a reason for their departures. On the same day, the House of Representatives reported that at least 17 lawmakers officially left the ADC for the NDC, with some also moving to the APC, citing unresolved internal conflicts within the ADC.
The defecting lawmakers, representing areas including Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, and Rivers states, read letters outlining their reasons for leaving, linked to what they described as “unresolved crises from the national to ward levels” within the ADC.
