Neymar set to shake off injury scare to play for Brazil at World Cup | World Cup 2026 News

Neymar Absent in Santos Draw Due to Minor Calf Injury

Published May 21, 2026

Santos, Brazil – Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading goal scorer, missed Santos’ 2-2 draw against San Lorenzo in the Copa Sudamericana due to a minor calf injury. Santos’ head of medical services, Rodrigo Zogaib, confirmed on Wednesday that the injury, described as edema, is not serious. He stated that the forward is expected to recover in time to join Brazil’s national team camp next week.

The 34-year-old was named in Brazil’s squad announced on Monday, marking his return after a lengthy absence due to injuries that sidelined him for much of the World Cup qualifying campaign. Brazil aims to secure a record-extending sixth World Cup title, with the tournament set to begin on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Brazilian coach Carlo Ancelotti faced significant scrutiny regarding Neymar’s inclusion, as he had not previously called up the former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona star since taking over the national team last year. Neymar’s performance at the World Cup will be his fourth appearance at the tournament.

Zogaib expressed optimism about Neymar’s recovery, noting that his anticipated progress should allow him to join the national squad in time for preparations ahead of the World Cup.

Neymar has netted 79 goals in 128 international appearances but has not played for Brazil since 2023. His recent stint with Saudi club Al-Hilal was marred by injuries, leading to his return to Santos last year, where he has struggled to find his form.

Brazil is scheduled to kick off their World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 13 in New Jersey, followed by matches against Haiti and Scotland in Group C. Prior to the tournament, they will play warm-up matches against Panama on May 31 and Egypt.
