APC Presidential Primaries Set to Occur in 8,809 Wards Nationwide

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will conduct its presidential primaries on Saturday across all 8,809 wards in Nigeria. This election aims to select the party’s candidate for the 2027 presidential race, which could signal a continuation of leadership from the incumbent.

According to a notice from the APC’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, every registered party member in each ward is eligible to vote for their preferred presidential aspirant. This marks a shift from the traditional delegate-based nomination process, which typically consolidates decision-making power among a smaller faction of officials and delegates.

The primary election is scheduled for May 23, 2026. Results will be collected at the local government level by officials appointed by the State Coordinator and the National Working Committee (NWC). Subsequently, these officials will aggregate the results from all local governments within their states and submit them to the Presidential Primary Election Committee in Abuja on the same day.

The scale of these primaries is notable, making it one of the largest intra-party elections the APC has ever held. It necessitates the coordinated effort of party machinery across hundreds of local governments and thousands of wards throughout the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

To oversee this extensive process, the APC has formed a seven-member Presidential Primary Election Committee led by former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim. Other members include Senators Ken Nnamani, Victor Udo Udoma, and Bassey Otu, alongside H.E. Otunba Grace Titi Laoye-Ponle, Rev. Jolly Nyame, and Idris Wada. Mr. Sanusi Musa serves as the committee’s secretary.

Additionally, a Presidential Primary Election Appeal Committee has been established, chaired by Hon. Aminu Masari, with Mr. Samuel Piwuna as secretary and Hon. Patricia Olubunmi Etteh as a member.

The party has appointed 37 Coordinators and Collation Officers across the states and FCT, including several prominent figures such as Sen. Hope Uzodimma for Imo State and Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for Lagos State.

This upcoming primary reflects a significant moment for the APC as it prepares to shape its leadership for the next election cycle.
