Islamic Cleric Ahmad Gumi Denies Allegations of Supporting Banditry in Nigeria

Prominent cleric Ahmad Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi has issued a statement denying allegations that he has expressed support for banditry in Nigeria. In a post shared on his verified Facebook page Saturday, Gumi described these claims as false and part of a malicious campaign against him.

Gumi stated that media interviews he conducted regarding insecurity and banditry were being misrepresented by what he termed “ethnic-interest groups” and “sectional internet content creators.” He accused these individuals of utilizing sensational headlines to garner attention at the expense of the suffering endured by victims of violence.

“I hereby state unequivocally that any video clip, written statement, or message attributed to me, whether directly or by innuendo, suggesting support for or justification of banditry does not emanate from me,” he declared.

Gumi reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria, describing himself as a “loyal citizen” who believes in the nation’s potential. He urged the public and authorities to disregard the materials circulating against him.

“I, therefore, urge the general public, the media, and the Nigerian state to disregard such fake, manipulated, and doctored materials currently in circulation,” he added.

He further warned that those who continue to disseminate what he labeled falsehoods would face legal repercussions. Gumi expressed hope for national healing and peace while offering condolences to the victims of violence throughout the country.

“I sincerely hope that our great nation will heal, and that all victims affected by this violence will find comfort in the collective determination of the nation and the international community to achieve a lasting solution to insecurity fueled by ignorance, poverty, and widespread social injustice,” Gumi said.
