ULM raises alarm over alleged APC infiltration plot in Akwa Ibom

Uyo Liberation Movement Raises Concerns Over Alleged Candidate Manipulation

The Uyo Liberation Movement (ULM), a political organization based in Akwa Ibom State, has expressed concerns over an alleged effort by state government officials and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to implant their associates as candidates in opposition parties.

In a press release issued by ULM Secretary-General Prince Emmanuel Sam, the group claims this initiative is part of the APC’s strategy to undermine genuine opposition ahead of the 2027 Uyo State Constituency election, suggesting it reflects a growing desperation within the party.

During a recent meeting, ULM reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the zoning arrangement for the Uyo State Constituency seat. The organization stated it is collaborating with all opposition political parties to ensure only authentic candidates from the Offot Ukwa Clan are allowed to participate in their primary elections.

“It is ironic that those currently attempting to disrupt this zoning arrangement were once its staunch advocates,” Sam said in the statement.

ULM provided a historical breakdown of the rotation of the State House of Assembly seat since 1999, noting that it has alternated among the four clans in Uyo: Oku Clan, Etoi Clan, Ikono Clan, and Offot Ukwa Clan. The group emphasized that Offot Ukwa Clan has held the seat only once during this period.

The statement outlined the following rotation:

  • 1999-2003: Hon. Bar. Aniedi Ndem (Oku Clan)
  • 2003-2007: Hon. Elder Archibong Inyang (Etoi Clan)
  • 2007-2011: Hon. Ekere Affia (Ikono Clan)
  • 2011-2015: Hon. Edwin Joseph (Offot Ukwa Clan)
  • 2015-2019: Hon. Monday Eyo (Oku Clan)
  • 2019-2023: Rt. Hon. Anietie Eka (Etoi Clan)
  • 2023-2027: Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo (Ikono Clan)

ULM argues that these records demonstrate a longstanding single-term arrangement and a clear rotation pattern among the clans. The group asserts that the current efforts to disrupt this arrangement must be opposed by all responsible citizens of Uyo.

The movement also urged opposition parties to remain vigilant and maintain their commitment to fairness and justice. Additionally, ULM praised the Labour Party National Screening Committee for disqualifying Emmanuel Friday Ben, citing his connections to an APC stakeholder.

In light of what they describe as the damaging impacts of the APC-led government on national opposition parties, ULM called on opposition groups in Akwa Ibom to take proactive measures to avoid similar challenges, emphasizing the importance of democratic integrity.
