‘United’ Spain first as Barcelona top absent Real Madrid in World Cup squad | World Cup 2026 News

Spain’s World Cup Roster Features Barcelona Dominance, First Absence of Real Madrid Players

Luis de la Fuente, head coach of the Spanish national soccer team, emphasized the priority of representing the nation over individual club affiliations when he unveiled the World Cup squad. Notably, the roster is decorated with eight players from FC Barcelona and, for the first time, excludes any representatives from Real Madrid.

As Spain gears up for the upcoming tournament, the European champions are among the favorites, with de la Fuente’s selection underscoring a shift in dynamics typically seen in the fierce rivalry of El Clasico. Defenders Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal were key Real Madrid players omitted from the 26-man lineup, as the team aims to capture its second World Cup title, following the victory in South Africa in 2010.

De la Fuente addressed concerns about his decision potentially alienating Real Madrid supporters. “For me, the greatest team there is—the very greatest—is the Spanish national team,” he remarked during a media event hosted by Spanish public broadcaster RTVE and news agency EFE. “I don’t look at where players come from or their background. What matters are Spanish players who are proud to represent their country and be part of a united nation.”

The roster includes key players from Barcelona, such as Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres. Additionally, seven players are currently based in the Premier League, reflecting a diverse representation of talent in the squad.

De la Fuente clarified that sporting considerations were paramount in his selections, despite the inherent subjectivity of team assembly. “The day I make a mistake, fail to make the right choice, or act in a way that might be beneficial just to achieve a result, I’m putting my job on the line,” he stated.

Spain is set to open Group H against Cape Verde, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. The coach mentioned a cautious approach regarding the fitness of players Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Mikel Merino, who are currently recovering from injuries.

“We’re in contact with all the clubs,” de la Fuente said, expressing optimism regarding their recoveries. “I think they’ll be available for the first match, but our focus extends beyond just that.”

Regarding Yamal, the 18-year-old winger is anticipated to play a crucial role in Spain’s attacking strategies. De la Fuente noted, “Yamal is thrilled and raring to go. He’s a young lad, but he possesses a remarkable maturity and understands that this is his moment.”
