Sharia no excuse for terrorism, kidnapping, crime grave sin in Islam – NACOMYO

NACOMYO Condemns Terrorism and Calls for Enhanced Security Measures
The National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO) has issued a warning to Muslims regarding the severe sins of terrorism, kidnapping, and murder within the framework of Islamic law. In a statement released over the weekend, the council emphasized that these actions contradict the fundamental principles of Islam.
The alert comes in response to reports that kidnappers, who abducted 39 students and seven teachers from communities in Oyo State last month, are allegedly demanding the implementation of Shariah law for their release. The demand, described by NACOMYO as deceptive and criminal, has been characterized as a gross misrepresentation of Islamic teachings by the council’s Oyo State Coordinator, Dawood Afolabi.
Afolabi’s statement criticized the kidnappers, asserting that they lack religious or moral authority to claim representation of Islam or Nigerian Muslims. He stressed that the acts of terrorism, kidnapping, and intimidation are fundamentally opposed to the objectives of Shariah law, which promotes justice and security.
The council also urged government officials to bolster intelligence and security measures around educational institutions. Afolabi called for swift action against those involved in criminal activities, stating that appropriate legal actions must be taken against perpetrators and their accomplices.
Additionally, he appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and media representatives to foster peaceful coexistence and resist the exploitation of religion by criminals.
Afolabi reiterated the values of Islam, noting, “Islam unequivocally denounces oppression and transgression,” and highlighted teachings from the Holy Qur’an about the sanctity of human life. He asserted that crimes against public safety are among the gravest offences and should invoke significant legal repercussions designed to safeguard society.
