KACRAN laments rising insecurity, charges farmers, herders to protect farmlands, grazing routes

Nigerian Cattle Rearers Urge Collaboration Amid Economic and Security Challenges

As Nigeria approaches the 2026/2027 farming season, the nation faces economic difficulties and ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders. The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has called on pastoralists and farmers to prioritize the protection of farmlands, grazing reserves, and cattle routes to ensure national peace and food security.

In a statement released on Saturday in Damaturu, KACRAN’s National President, Hon. Khalil Mohd Bello, emphasized the importance of cooperation between herders and farmers. “Herders and farmers are partners in progress. Sustainable peace can only be achieved when both groups operate within the law, with mutual respect and understanding,” he stated.

Bello highlighted the need to safeguard every hectare of farmland from preventable losses, citing the impact of rising fuel prices following subsidy removals and global economic pressures affecting the cost of agricultural inputs.

“Nigeria is currently grappling with multiple security challenges that consume trillions of naira annually—resources that should be directed toward nation-building,” he added.

He noted that insecurity has disrupted arable farming, livestock production, and fisheries, displacing millions and making vast agricultural lands inaccessible.

The statement also praised Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni for reducing tractor hiring costs from ₦100,000 to ₦50,000 per day. Bello commended the governor’s initiatives to reclaim grazing reserves, improve water infrastructure, and create new reserves in areas densely populated with livestock.
