World Cup 2026: ‘Still an idiot despite my age’ – Klopp apologises to Nagelsmann

Jurgen Klopp Apologizes to German Coach Julian Nagelsmann

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has issued an apology to Julian Nagelsmann, head coach of the German national team, regarding a remark he made prior to the team’s FIFA World Cup campaign.

Klopp’s use of the word “still” while discussing Nagelsmann’s role sparked controversy, suggesting uncertainty about the coach’s future. While serving as a pundit on Magenta TV, alongside former Germany international Thomas Muller, Klopp commented on the team selection, stating, “Fortunately, Julian Nagelsmann is still picking the team.”

Following Germany’s decisive 7-1 victory over World Cup debutants Curacao on June 14, Klopp expressed regret over his choice of words. “I have already identified the most despised word of the year: ‘still.’ I could have slapped myself for that, but it was too late as I was live on TV. It just came out so effortlessly, and it holds no significance,” he remarked.

The 58-year-old further underscored his support for Nagelsmann, saying, “We are entirely behind you, regardless of what you decide with this. Nothing will arise that is meant to disrupt the process here.”

Klopp has not been active in football management since stepping down as Liverpool’s manager in 2024. He currently holds the position of Head of Global Football at Red Bull, though speculation surrounds his potential as a successor to Nagelsmann.
