Super Eagles: ‘I want to retire’ – Sadiq Umar gives reasons

Valencia Forward Sadiq Umar Contemplates Future with Super Eagles

VALENCIA, Spain — Sadiq Umar, the forward for Valencia CF, has revealed that he is considering retirement from the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles. In a recent interview with Radio France International Hausa, Umar stated that he has not made a final decision regarding his international career but will reassess his options when the new season begins.

“I am contemplating retirement from the Nigerian national team, but I will finalize my decision when the new season starts,” Umar said.

The striker acknowledged the disappointment surrounding Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, a topic that has generated considerable discussion within the football community. However, Umar refrained from pinpointing specific reasons for the setback.

“I cannot specifically identify the reason for our failure, but that is now in the past,” he remarked. “We must concentrate on the next World Cup, which is four years away.”

Umar’s absence from recent Super Eagles squads has raised concerns, but he attributed it to the high level of competition among players rather than any internal issues.

“I was not selected. Perhaps my profile does not align with their needs, and there are other players performing well in the team because, as you know, Nigeria is rich in talent,” he explained.

When asked if age or motivation might influence his decision about retirement, Umar emphasized the importance of personal reflection and long-term goals.

“I still have time to reach a conclusive decision on that matter. This is why I mentioned that I will wait for the commencement of the new season before making my choice, allowing me to contemplate what will aid me in concentrating on my career and sustaining my presence in football,” he said, drawing parallels to icons like Cristiano Ronaldo.
