US Embassy, Consulate shut down operations in Nigeria for Juneteenth holiday

U.S. Mission in Nigeria to Close for Juneteenth

The United States Mission in Nigeria will temporarily close its Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos on Friday, June 19, 2026, in recognition of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

The announcement was made Thursday via the mission’s official X account. Normal consular and diplomatic services are set to resume following the holiday.

This closure will impact routine visa appointments, passport services, and other standard consular operations.

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The day marks the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, who informed previously enslaved African Americans of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.

In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday following legislation signed into law by former President Joe Biden. Since then, federal government offices, including U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, have observed the day as a public holiday.
