Policeman missing, 20 killed as gunmen invade Plateau community

Attack in Plateau State Leaves Over 20 Dead, Police Officer Missing

BOKKOS, Nigeria — A serving police officer has been reported missing following a violent attack on Kawel village in the Mushere Chiefdom of Bokkos Local Government Area on Sunday night. The incident left more than 20 residents dead and several others injured.

Conflict journalist Masara Kim confirmed the attack, stating that about 100 individuals identified as Fulani militias descended upon the village around 10:30 p.m., targeting residents as they slept. Armed with advanced weaponry, the assailants overpowered local youths who were providing security.

Kim reported that many victims were killed in their beds, while others were shot while attempting to flee into nearby bushes.

Adams Ayuba, a community member, expressed alarm over the incident and noted that a security alert had been issued prior to the invasion. He claimed that residents had reported sightings of large groups of Fulani individuals gathering on the outskirts of the village, but security agencies did not respond adequately.

“The bandits invaded our village last night, going from house to house and killing well over 20 people,” Ayuba said. “I also heard one of our youths, a police officer who attempted to fight back, has been missing. We don’t know if he was killed, kidnapped, or managed to escape.”

In a separate account, community member Patience Ibrahim shared her grief on social media, reporting the loss of four family members in the attack. “My in-laws were killed in this very attack. Four people in the same family were killed in one house,” she wrote.

As of this report, the Plateau State Police Command and the Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace have not issued statements regarding the attack.
