Magistrates threaten strike in Kwara over discriminatory welfare treatment

Magistrates in Kwara State Threaten Strike Over Welfare Issues
The Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, has announced plans for an indefinite industrial action set to begin on July 2, 2026, if demands regarding what they describe as discriminatory treatment are not addressed by the state government.
Following an emergency congress held on Wednesday, the association’s chairman issued a communiqué detailing members’ frustrations over years of neglect from the state administration.
The magistrates are calling for immediate attention to several welfare concerns, including a review of salaries, payment of outstanding allowances, and a fair distribution of official vehicles. The association highlighted that a Grade Level 14 Magistrate currently receives less compensation than a Grade Level 14 Court Registrar, describing this disparity as unjust and demoralizing for judicial officers.
In addition, members expressed dissatisfaction over the non-payment of furniture allowances, which are due every four years. According to the association, the last payment of this allowance occurred during the tenure of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
Other grievances cited include inadequate compensation for unpaid allowances and unequal access to official vehicles, with some magistrates receiving vehicles while others have been overlooked entirely.
The communique indicated that there was initial support for a strike to begin within 48 hours, but the Chief Judge of the state advised adherence to due process, suggesting that any ultimatum must extend for at least seven days. Consequently, after discussions between the magistrates and judicial authorities, both parties agreed on a seven-day notice period, including weekends.
The communiqué stated, “Today, we held a crucial Congress where the voices of the magistrates were heard, loud, clear, and resolute.” Members voiced their frustration and called for immediate action, emphasizing a strong desire to commence a strike within the suggested timeframe.
While the association’s leadership continues to engage with relevant stakeholders to resolve these issues, it is clear that members are at a critical juncture. “It is best believed that you have chosen the right Executives who are also fighting alongside every other Magistrate. We are all frustrated and tired,” reiterated the officials.
In closing, the chairman urged members to remain calm, united, and strategic as they pursue their demands, assuring them that efforts toward a favorable resolution are ongoing. “Let it be known: This strike shall commence on Thursday, the 2nd day of July, 2026,” the communiqué affirmed.
If unresolved, the anticipated industrial action could significantly disrupt proceedings in magistrates’ courts across Kwara State within the established notice period.
