UNIOSUN shuts Ifetedo campus over student’s death

Osun State University Closes Ifetedo Campus Indefinitely After Student’s Death
Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has announced the indefinite closure of its Ifetedo Campus following the death of Grace Osunlakin, a 400-level student in the Criminology and Security Studies program.
The university communicated this decision in a statement released on Thursday by Public Relations Officer Ademola Adesoji. The institution described Osunlakin’s death as a tragic loss that has profoundly affected the university community.
Osunlakin reportedly passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, leading university authorities to reassess the situation and implement measures to ensure calm on campus.
In the statement, the management expressed deep sorrow over the student’s demise, extending heartfelt condolences to her family, peers, and all those impacted by the incident.
“The University Management extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the student community, and all stakeholders affected by this unfortunate incident,” the statement read.
The decision to close the campus was made after careful consideration of the circumstances surrounding Osunlakin’s death and the emotional state of the students. This closure aims to allow time for these emotions to settle.
The university also indicated that the suspension of campus activities would facilitate a thorough evaluation of healthcare facilities, medical personnel, and water supply systems at the Ifetedo Campus. This review is part of broader efforts to address ongoing challenges and enhance conditions for students and staff.
The statement reaffirmed the university’s commitment to ensuring the safety, welfare, and well-being of all members of the university community.
UNIOSUN assured the public that a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the incident would be conducted, with measures put in place to prevent future occurrences.
“May Almighty God grant the family of the deceased, the students, and the entire University community the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement concluded.
The management has urged students, parents, and other stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with the institution as efforts are made to address the identified issues and restore normal academic operations at the campus.
