Kano State Governor Forms Investigation Committee After Student’s Death

KANO, Nigeria — Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has established an administrative investigation committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of Maimuna Sani, a 14-year-old student at St. Louis College.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson. The committee will be chaired by Gwani Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, the Commissioner for Education.

In addition to the chair, the committee comprises several members, including Barrister Aminu Hussain, Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters; Barrister Hamza Dantani; Baba Abubakar Umar, Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board; Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director-General of Media and Publicity; Imam Ahmed Zubairu, a private school proprietor; and the Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association of St. Louis College. Hafsat Aminu Adhama, Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Education, has been appointed as secretary, while Binta Abdullahi Mukhtar, Under Secretary/REPA, will serve as assistant secretary.

The committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive and independent investigation into the circumstances leading to the student’s death. It is expected to establish a clear timeline of events and identify any lapses in supervision or institutional procedures.

The terms of reference include examining the events prior to the student’s death, reviewing relevant medical records and reports, and investigating the social environment within the college. The committee will also assess allegations of bullying and unauthorized disciplinary practices among students.

Furthermore, the committee will evaluate existing complaint and reporting mechanisms, review staff compliance with student supervision guidelines, and propose reforms to both disciplinary and boarding school management systems.

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to uncover the truth regarding the incident and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He instructed committee members to approach their duties with fairness, diligence, and professionalism.

Maimuna Sani’s death, which occurred on Saturday, has prompted a police investigation in response to conflicting accounts from her family regarding the incident. The committee is expected to deliver its findings and recommendations to the state government within the designated timeframe.
