2026 World Cup: ‘I’m very hopeful’ – Troost-Ekong predicts Morocco vs France

Former Super Eagles Captain Optimistic About Morocco’s Chances at FIFA World Cup

William Troost-Ekong, former captain of Nigeria’s national football team, expressed hope that Morocco will defeat France in the upcoming World Cup match, contributing to Africa’s historic journey in the tournament.

Troost-Ekong praised African teams for their progress on the global stage, notably highlighting Morocco’s impressive run at the 2022 World Cup, where they became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.

He stated that the performances of African teams in the current tournament illustrate their capability to compete with established footballing powers.

“Morocco dismantled those barriers and showcased what is achievable at the last World Cup,” Troost-Ekong said, reflecting on their past success. He added that many African teams and players have demonstrated they can compete closely with the best in the world.

“I am very hopeful that this could be the World Cup where an African team surpasses Morocco’s achievements. If they reach that level, I hope they can go all the way,” he remarked.

As Morocco prepares for a crucial match against France on Thursday, July 9, Troost-Ekong believes the Atlas Lions represent the continent’s best chance at making history once again. “Morocco is undoubtedly the first team that comes to mind,” he noted.

Troost-Ekong also acknowledged the efforts of other African nations in the tournament, specifically mentioning Senegal and Ivory Coast, both of whom performed admirably until their eliminations. “Senegal and Ivory Coast both performed exceptionally well until their exits, and they were somewhat unfortunate,” he said.

With the hopes of millions resting on Morocco’s shoulders, Troost-Ekong’s comments underscore the growing prominence of African teams in international football.
