Lagos warns businesses against ‘no refund, no return’ policy
Lagos State Government Warns Businesses Against Unfair Consumer Policies
The Lagos State Government has issued a warning to businesses throughout the state regarding the enforcement of stringent policies such as “No Return, No Refund, No Replacement” and “No Cancellation After Payment.” Officials stated that these conditions do not supersede consumer rights guaranteed by law.
This advisory was released by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), which emphasized the government’s dedication to safeguarding consumer interests and fostering fair trade practices.
Afolabi Solebo, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of LASCOPA, stated that while businesses may establish reasonable terms and conditions, such policies must not infringe upon consumers’ legal rights, particularly when goods are found to be defective, unsafe, inaccurately described, or unsuitable for their intended purpose.
Solebo pointed out that consumers are entitled to fair treatment and should not be coerced into accepting inferior products or services due solely to a company’s disclaimer.
“Any policy designed to deny consumers their lawful rights is unfair, misleading, and unenforceable,” he added.
The Lagos State Government is collaborating with citizens to eliminate unfair trade practices, including the indiscriminate use of these restrictive policies. “Consumer rights are protected by law, and businesses must operate responsibly and fairly. We encourage consumers to be aware of their rights and report violations to LASCOPA for swift action,” Solebo stated.
He further explained that consumers are entitled to appropriate remedies for defective goods or services, provided they comply with relevant terms of purchase and legal provisions.
Solebo urged event centers, hotels, and other service providers to implement transparent, consumer-friendly return, refund, and cancellation policies, which can enhance trust and accountability in the marketplace.
Residents were advised to inspect items before purchasing, retain receipts and proof of payment, and promptly report instances of unfair trade practices, misleading business practices, and defective products.
LASCOPA remains dedicated to fostering a fair, safe, and competitive marketplace that benefits both consumers and businesses, aligning with the Lagos State Government’s objectives of promoting sustainable economic growth and boosting consumer confidence.
Solebo also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing laws and regulations that protect consumer welfare.
He encouraged residents to collaborate with the government to promote safety, responsible business conduct, and compliance with regulations in order to establish a safer, more consumer-friendly environment in Lagos.
Residents are invited to submit complaints or inquiries to the office of the General Manager/CEO of LASCOPA, located at Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos, either via email or through the agency’s contact lines for prompt assistance.
