NAFDAC Seizes Tankers Carrying Diesel Instead of Edible Oil in Lagos
LAGOS, Nigeria — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated two tankers in Lagos that were supposed to transport edible vegetable oil but were found carrying Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) instead. The seizure occurred during a recent enforcement operation and comes just three months after NAFDAC issued a warning to transporters prohibiting the dual use of tankers for petroleum products and edible oil, citing serious public health risks.
Mr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, reported that investigations revealed the tankers, designated exclusively for vegetable oil, had been loaded with diesel in violation of food safety regulations.
The tanker manager asserted ignorance of the color-coding system intended for edible oil transport.
“The two tankers and their drivers are currently in custody as we conduct further investigations to ascertain the full scope of the violations,” Iluyomade said. He emphasized that tankers meant for edible vegetable oil must never be used for transporting petroleum products due to the risk of contamination and potential danger to consumers.
“Vegetable oil should not be associated with petrol or petroleum products, which is why we enforce this separation strictly,” he added. Iluyomade underscored the importance of adhering to international best practices, stating that any tanker designated for edible vegetable oil must be used solely for that purpose.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its dedication to upholding food safety standards nationwide and urged transporters and operators to strictly comply with regulations.
