Motorists and residents are increasingly alarmed following a recent surge in armed robbery incidents along the Nawfia stretch of the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, where one individual was reportedly killed in the latest attack.
A social media user highlighted the escalating insecurity on this busy highway, calling upon the Anambra State Government and local law enforcement to take decisive action to prevent further loss of life.
Residents of the Nawfia community have voiced their concerns about ongoing armed robberies, with criminals allegedly ambushing drivers on the expressway. In a bid to mitigate these threats, community members recently organized a significant environmental clean-up effort aimed at clearing dense vegetation and removing obstacles that have been used to obstruct the road and trap unsuspecting travelers.
Despite these proactive measures, residents report that criminal activity has persisted, with assailants increasingly operating with boldness. The latest robbery incident, which was captured in a video that has circulated online, resulted in a fatality, further exacerbating fears among those who travel along this route.
Community members are urging security agencies to heighten surveillance along the expressway, deploy regular patrol teams, and dismantle any criminal hideouts in the vicinity. They emphasize the importance of securing the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, one of the busiest highways in the South-East.
Residents and commuters have also appealed to the Anambra State government, the police, the military, and other security bodies for urgent, coordinated action to restore safety and confidence for those using the route.
As of this report, the Anambra State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the recent incidents.
