Imo State Government Demolishes Illegal Structures Following Student’s Death
OWERRI, Imo State — The Imo State Government has initiated a demolition of illegal structures and suspected criminal hideouts near the front gate of Imo State University (IMSU). This action was taken in the wake of a tragic incident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old student.
The demolition comes less than 24 hours after the death of Chibuike Friday, a student who was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road. According to the State Police Command, the accident occurred when a Lexus ES 350, allegedly driven at high speed during an unauthorized street race, hit Friday.
Another individual, Bright Ukwuoma, suffered injuries in the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment. The driver, Dike Chibuike Micheal, from the Oguta area of the state, was arrested at the scene after police intervened to rescue him from an angry crowd.
Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, oversaw the demolition operation. This effort was conducted in partnership with the Owerri Capital Development Authority, led by Frank Nkem. Government officials stated that the initiative aims to restore environmental order and enhance road safety by reclaiming public spaces that have been illegally occupied.
During the demolition, several shanties believed to harbor criminal elements engaged in drug trafficking and other illicit activities were dismantled.
Audu Garba Bosso, the State Commissioner of Police, condemned the reckless driving that led to the fatal accident. He has directed the State Traffic Department to conduct a thorough investigation, promising that the suspect would face legal consequences.
Residents and commuters in the area have expressed optimism that the removal of these structures will improve visibility for drivers, enhance pedestrian safety, and reduce criminal activity around the university.
