Renewed Bandit Attacks in Taraba State Displace Hundreds
Lau Local Government Area, Taraba State — Suspected bandits have intensified attacks on several communities in the region over the past month, resulting in five deaths, multiple injuries, and the displacement of hundreds of residents.
The attacks have primarily targeted the areas of Kunini, Jimlari, Garin-Magaji, Donnada, and Garin-Dogo, where locals report an alarming increase in kidnappings and violent incidents. Among the abducted was Jauro Tace, the village chief of Garin-Magaji, who was taken at gunpoint and later released following an alleged ransom payment.
Between June 30 and July 27, 2026, residents recounted witnessing five separate murders, largely occurring during kidnapping attempts.
A visit to the affected areas revealed a significant evacuation, predominantly among Fulani families, who fled their homes for safety in Garin-Dogo, the administrative center of Garin-Dogo Ward. Many displaced individuals are currently residing with the Legislative Leader of Lau Local Government Council, Dauda.
Local resident Joseph Mustafa expressed the pervasive fear gripping the community. “Nobody in Lau sleeps with both eyes closed anymore because of the activities of the bandits,” he said.
The resurgence of violence comes despite previous efforts by Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas to alleviate banditry in the area shortly after taking office. Attempts to contact Lau Local Government Council Chairman Peter Julius for comment were unsuccessful.
A senior government official, who requested anonymity, indicated that the resurgence of bandit activity has led many farmers to abandon their fields, raising concerns over potential food shortages if the situation remains unaddressed.
In the meantime, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jalingo is treating two victims, Musa Umar and Alhaji Abdul Biro, who were injured during an attack in Bumanda village, part of the Jimlari community. The victims reported that their assailants were heavily armed, complicating any resistance from residents.
Community members have appealed to both the federal government and security agencies for enhanced operations in the affected regions to restore peace and facilitate the return of displaced villagers.
