Clashes Erupt Between Rival Terrorist Groups, Resulting in Heavy Casualties

A recent confrontation between two rival terrorist factions, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has reportedly resulted in significant casualties among fighters in the Lake Chad Islands, heightening security concerns in Nigeria’s North-East region.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported that the fighting began near Mangari and Tumbun Allura as both groups vied for control of key locations within the Lake Chad basin. During the skirmish, JAS fighters reportedly gained the upper hand, inflicting heavy losses on ISWAP and seizing two boats associated with the rival group before retreating to their stronghold in Kurnawa.

The captured boats are deemed crucial for transporting fighters and supplies across the Lake Chad waterways, which presents complex logistical challenges for operatives in the area. Makama emphasized the strategic importance of these watercraft, stating that they facilitate movement of personnel, weapons, and supplies through the difficult terrain.

Authorities are on high alert following the clashes, with troops deployed in Mallam Fatori, Baga, Cross Kauwa, Kukawa, and other nearby communities in the Lake Chad area. There are concerns that fleeing ISWAP fighters may disperse into surrounding regions.

Security assessments indicate that the ongoing conflicts could lead to an uptick in isolated attacks, including improvised explosive device (IED) ambushes and retaliatory strikes as affected groups attempt to regroup.

In response, military officials are reportedly considering a series of intensified operations, which may include increased patrols and improved intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance measures to obstruct the reorganization of fleeing insurgents in the area.
